The very story of Shiva Purana happens to mirror the Bhagavata Purana itself. According to the version of the Shiva Purana, Shiva was born as an avatar of Vishnu, who became a saviour, who made sacrifices and who was married to Parvati. From him numerous children were born one of whom was Ganesh, a child who was said to delight Shiva. After some time, Shiva is believed to have left Parvati and she went into deep meditation. Thereupon a pregnancy arose and she gave birth to Skanda.
The following are accounts from the various Puranas of his birth, which is said to have happened during an eclipse. Vishnu, along with the Mother Goddess Lakshmi, Brahma and Shiva was on a deer hunt. Brahma asked the Mother Goddess to remove the eclipse covering the entire universe. Upon seeing the eclipse, Shiva left the four and went to a cave, where Parvati was known to be meditating. Parvati was startled upon seeing her husband and in her attempts to stop him from entering, she attempted to flee from his room, forgetting to take her garment off. Shiva perceived her as she tried to strip herself. He was fond of her so he did not pursue her. Yet he told her that she was exposed.
Parvati, mortified by what she had done, prayed to Vishnu to give her husband back and Vishnu granted her this boon. Though startled at first, Shiva and Parvati now spent a blissful period in their chambers where he soon conceived a child.
