The Rosetta Stone is a remarkable find, but dont think that this is the end of archeology. In fact, it set off a series of discoveries that are still creating excitement in Egypt today! The Rosetta Stone has been scrutinized to the point where even the smallest grain of sand left on it could lead to a monumental find. In 1999 a group of Egyptologists discovered a footbath inside the large room at the site of the Temples of Amun in the Valley of the Kings. They had uncovered several stone vessels and determined that these were worn from being washed in an ancient footbath. Through sedimentology, they discovered that the top layer of the pots had been created after the objects that had been originally found in situ. This discovery showed that the priests used the footbath prior to the original placement of the contents of the footbath. It also meant that the footbath itself could have been there for hundreds, or even thousands of years! This new era in the study of ancient Egypt is being studied at the site of Amun at Karnak, and has led to even more exciting discoveries!
The Rosetta Stone will always be known for what it revolutionized. It became the first, definitive decoded script, and subsequently revolutionized the field of archeology. Not only did the Rosetta Stone prove that ancient Egyptian was decoded, but it provided the first important data regarding Egyptian government, religion, and culture. It also allowed us to connect the knowledge of modern Egypt with ancient Egypt and gave insight into the past.
Analysing the stone and its remnants still yields surprises and new discoveries. Rumi found its long-disappeared script and translated it to modern Egyptian Arabic so that its meaning and purpose was made clear to all. Lepsius and Layard were able to decipher the hieroglyphs on the stele. Champollion used both the stone and the crystal fragment to help in deciphering the hieroglyphs on the stele. All of these great men changed the world in very different ways.
Why does the plain-looking Rosetta Stone retain such a luster today, two centuries after its code was cracked Egyptologist John Ray told Smithsonian Magazines Beth Py-Lieberman in 2007 that the stone is really the key, not simply to ancient Egypt; its the key to decipherment itself. We knew there were big civilizations, like Egypt, but theyd fallen silent. With the cracking of the Rosetta stone, they could speak with their own voice and suddenly whole areas of history were revealed.
When the British Museum display was well-publicized, the hype helped spur the discovery of a few other newly-unearthed antiquities from ancient Egypt. These include the remains of a mummified child found in a tomb in an Egyptian desert. An even more spectacular find was made in the late 1820s, when Amarna’s Hathor statue was discovered in a block of sandstone by the Bedouins. The British Museum acquired this piece of history as well, only to lose it to a private collector in 1859. Finally, after a desperate search, it turned up again in 1905. And the story of how the statue was returned has become a universal quest for the hearts of justice and injustice .
The pieces of riverbed sediment exposed by the borings below the pyramid-shaped structure at Beni Hasan reveals that drape-fitted limestone from stonework was fashioned into the shape of the pyramid. This shows evidence that the pyramid at Beni Hasan was not cut out of the bedrock, as previously thought, but was built from pisé, a type of stonework similar to lime.
Outside of the hallway of the Sohag Museum the mountains of southern Egypt are particularly dramatic, as seen in this satellite view in December 2012. The view looks southwest. The mountains are in part formed by a narrow river that cuts through the northern shore of the Fayum Depression. In the top center of the image is the palace of King Amenhotep III at Malkata (upper right). Below it, part of the pyramids of Cheops and Chephren at Karnak can be seen. The pyramids can be seen with the thin gray line that is the Nile in the middle, and are visible as the long band on the north side of the image. The landscape changes by the side of the road at the bottom center from a limestone plateau to the higher cliffs and hills to the west. The cliffs and hills are covered with pine and eucalyptus trees. In the lower right side of the image is the small village of Beni Hassan, and part of the hill range can be seen to the northwest, and is the range where the National Museum was located for decades.
