A New Jersey U.S. District Court judge on Thursday declared a mistrial in the case of two families who “faked” an adoption of their newborn children, one of whom was murdered.

Prosecutors said both families planned to sell their children to adoption agencies. An adult adoptee of one family later testified that he had faked his own suicide in order to “seek revenge” on the adoptive parents. Another woman testified that she had faked her abduction by her adoptive family, in order to eventually flee her family’s adoptive parents. A third woman, who had written a letter to her mother, testified that she had also faked an abduction, and had been raped by her adoptive parents and sexually molested by her adoptive brother.

The prosecutors had portrayed the adoptions as a “world of lies,” saying that the families were “embroiled in a web of deceit” and that their “actions were a hoax, a false and cruel mockery of a longstanding social institution.”

“Sometimes we judge too soon,” the judge said, standing before dozens of media and spectators after ordering the mistrial. “I’m frustrated that we can’t put this behind us.”

The New Jersey families are not facing jail time or probation, as originally stated, but rather fines ranging from $2,500 to $25,000.

One of the parents, Natalee Holloway, was found dead in June, allegedly a suicide; her body was discovered floating in a lake in Aruba and she was pregnant with the baby she had been visiting. The birth mother, who was the child’s mother at the time of her disappearance, had disappeared a few weeks prior to the child’s birth. The second mother had been raising the child during the mother’s absence.

The two sets of adoptive parents were originally represented by different attorneys in separate trials.

However, the two mothers were later found to have faked the births, and had told different adoptive parents about their whereabouts in order to protect themselves from kidnapping, extortion or murder.
