With the help of Altair Associates, Microsoft and IBM agreed to release a version of MS-DOS for the CX16 system. The IBM/Microsoft deal called for IBM to put $8 million into a research project, code-named Project Chicago, to produce an implementation of MS-DOS for the Altair, which was called the DOS/86.
Gates wanted Microsoft to produce an “an attractive-looking version of DOS for the CX16.” A version of the MS-DOS for the CX16 was released in December 1982. Bill Gates, who was accompanying IBM and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen at the time, was impressed with the app. “Paul Allen and I had never seen this version of DOS,” he later recalled. “It was a beautiful piece of software. It had some good features and it was stable.”
Although the DOS/86 was a promising product, Altair did not follow up with a version of its operating system for the PC. Instead, they released an updated version of the Altair BASIC programming language
