i never used assimil, as i was busy traveling. however, i did try duolingo, which uses the same method as pimsleur, but with a vocabulary list. i did complete the russian course before moving to moscow, but then i switched to a better source for russian – rosetta stone. my teacher was a native russian speaker, and the german teacher was russian and was able to help me with german vocabulary. my german is quite good.
pimsleur did work for me, but i can use the program in other languages. i found the discussions on my problem areas quite useful. pimsleur is more expensive, but i have to say that it is great for learning a language!

unfortunately, it’s a little difficult to translate something “how to get here” into a language other than your first language. for example, i’m not sure what to say for “how to write an e-mail” or “how to make friends”. it’s probably easier for you to do that, although that doesn’t help me.
i’ve been teaching greek to 12 year old kids who are in the process of learning to read it. i’ve been doing it for about 3 years now, and i really think it’s the best way of learning greek i’ve found yet. it can also be fun, because you know who your students are going to be a few months from now! it’s really good for them to learn which sounds they don’t like, and the real contrasts, or at least the ones that are easiest for them to learn. (and the students love it, because they get to pick out their own words. the ones i liked best were, “i don’t like greek.” “rufina! this is the most delicious sandwich ever! it’s a greek one! with greek sauce! do you like it?” etc.)
hi louisai would say that i am using the following versions: a&s german for academic purposes, hansen & quinn, and jact reading greek. i chose to start with a&s because of all of the advice i have read from various folks on here. i know that the jact reading greek is helpful in terms of vocabulary, the hansen and quinn is very helpful for grammar, and then for speaking practice i like the a&s. having said that, and having used each of them, i find that they all accomplish the same thing. i could not hear any difference in pronunciation between the a&s and the hansen & quinn. also i find that the hansen & quinn, is less than helpful in terms of grammar. i would say that they have the most helpful vocabulary and pronunciation. i also found that i could not get through the hansen & quinn without having an a&s (this is because of the listening). i would say that i can understand anything up to about page 150 (having only taken to at the end of chapter 8). the a&s is very helpful in that, and has very good vocabulary. i would say that i had more help from the a&s in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation. i like the hansen and quinn, because they give a very good explanation of grammar. but i must say that i never used the whole thing until the end of chapter 8 (i did the first three chapters and the last three and just finished up chapter 8) and would advise others to just pick out chapters that are more useful to them if they are just starting out. i also found the hansen and quinn to be a bit more advanced than the a&s which i liked better, so i would say that if you are just starting out, and having a little trouble with grammar, you will find the hansen and quinn easier. but it is really up to the individual. the jact reading greek, was simply used for vocabulary and pronunciation.
