The women are victims of a cycle of addiction and abuse and there are medical and therapeutic interventions that can save lives! A counselor telling these broken souls living in poverty to “find better ways to entertain themselves” is NOT the answer!

Even when you are not behind bars you still have drugs everywhere, you have to say no. That is your responsibility not someone else. Are any of you thankful for everything that the tax payers, that said no to drugs and crime, are doing for you
I worked in the prison system ….the women should have babies taken away if they are in for meth …cocaine and the real heavy drugs. Weed no big deal. veterans get it and its medicine now. Aggravated theft and assaults' and murder..yes…the babies need good role models. those women that were "taken advantage of" and in for defending themselves should be out with their baby as long as its a safe environment for mother and child. Real bad crimes shooting…gang related ….theft…the real bad stuff yes take the child away. But if your in for minor things like week or alcohol…geez they need to have a program for that and when they get out go to a halfway house and learn how to ease back into society.

Unfortunately women get pregnant going into jail because they know it makes juries go easier on them and also because they will have lots of special treatment and preferential treatment! 24 hours is a insult they should give them like the first three months at least if not the first six! It’s not about the women I understand they committed a crime and have a debt to repay society but it isn’t about the women it’s about the mental health of the baby and because of that maybe six months but at a minimum they should get three just for the sake of the baby!

I managed to keep myself together almost to the end but what finally got me was seeing so many women come and comfort Elijah's mom when she got back. I could almost hear her pain. If you've ever seen the film about Chess Records and Muddy Waters and his crew there's the scene when the harmonica player dies. When Muddy finally goes up to the bathroom and closes the door there then comes a wail like nothing I've ever heard. It is true pain, true friendship, true love that comes from the deepest places within Muddy Waters' soul. Even his pain can't come close to the pain of a woman whose child has been forcibly taken from her at birth.
Excellent documentary short from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon. It's heartbreaking to see these mothers get separated from their newborns in less than 24 hours.
That little baby by himself in the car seat without his Momma, that broke me :'(
Addiction has such a strong hold on these women , on anyone that’s addicted. Drugs, substance abuse of any kind can destroy family’s & generators to come I’ve seen it happen . Yes they made there bed and they need to lay in it, they are & no excuses for anyone that has committed a crime , but if you have never been addicted you never really know what there going through or why they made the decisions they did. Addicted people, these women need support, they need help & there are addicts that receive help but continue to relapse. Don’t know if these women have ever received help at any time, but when you have seen generations in your family behave this way how do you expect your children are going to turn out? And your children’s children? It can be stopped, with help & support & yes if they want it to , but if an addict is not in the right mind how do they know they want it? Not all do , helping someone can be exhausting but I encourage anyone that’s dealing with this hang in there ! There is a light at end of the tunnel ..I pray lord for anyone that’s addicted, for these women in this and all prisons that you give them the strength to fight for there lives , fight for there kids and I pray that you send someone or guide them to a program that will allow them to walk the road of sobriety in Jesus name , amen 🙏🙏

This is why I never watch Orange is the new Black hate to see women behind bars. Beyoncé types promoting single women has created this equality nonsense, women are fooled to behave like men.
Extremely hard to watch and extremely important. It has been this way in the USA for decades. I contributed to the research of a report published in 1999 documenting the shackling of pregnant and labouring women in custody in the USA, as well as poor health provision, sexual abuse by prison staff and the isolation of women in high security (Not Part of My Sentence). The human rights violations that occur within the US criminal justice system are a travesty that the world continues to turn a blind eye to.
Conveniently not mention what they're in prison for. I bet it's not just petty drug use, probably something bad

I went to college for Administration of Justice. The US Prison system isn't set up for rehabilitation, obviously. For women, it is a baby-making factory for future non-violent inmates.
