Darkbolt is a game of political games that integrates military, economic, political, diplomatic and religious factors in the background of a fictional East Roman Empire civil war.
The game is set in the first half of the 1st century BC. The Roman Empire is experiencing a civil war, fought by pro and anti Consuls, their competitors for power. The Roman Legions and their tribal and allied allies are marching against Parthian forces to free the capital. The civil war is an international affair, as the Great King of the Parthians is trying to destabilize the East Roman state in order to take power for himself. Roman factions will have to face nobles and mercenaries who are working with one of the warring parties to achieve their own agendas, on the top of the conflict.
A free base mechanic allows a complex combination of player’s pieces, using removable cards, into one powerful military force. Each turn represents a month or a season. The common months are March, April and May, others are marked out. When a month is finished, a new one opens up. The game covers the most important moments of the civil war, like The Battle of Arausio (59BC), The Battle of Carrhae (53BC) and the beginning of the 3rd Parthian War (43BC).
Each faction will have its own goals and set of military, political, diplomatic and religious cards. Each will also be composed of different types of units (cavalry, legionary, auxilliary or support units) that contribute to the performance of the faction. Some cards may not be available for each faction, others will be available in different amounts. When a card becomes unavailable, the player will not be able to use it that turn.
Strategies can be ambitious or simple, depending on player’s hand and abilities. The set of possible strategies is quite wide, and we will have plenty of time to adjust your plans when you lose or win. You can also write your own plans after a game, but they will have to be tested and balanced with the other players. A turn is a game event, and you will play cards to avoid or exploit a condition, to create a situation that favors you or harms the others.
