to start with, let’s look at how a discrete event simulator works. the discrete event simulator is the program which performs the simulation. in the case of modeling a system, the discrete event simulator will take data and information about the system from the user and use them to simulate the system. the system modeler then interacts with the software by using the modeling interface. the modeling interface is the user-friendly interface in which the system modeler and the system analyzer interact to develop the system model. the user is the person who uses the system simulator.
1. introduction for decades the primary goal of geoscientists has been to understand the processes that shaped the earth’s surface, including the origin of the continents, the distribution of igneous and sedimentary rock, the physical properties of rocks, the geological history of the earth and the impact of the biosphere on the earth’s surface. from these basic questions, other scientific disciplines have developed and the geosciences have become an important part of the earth’s systems. this has led to a greater need for geoscientists to work in teams of scientists that employ a variety of geoscientific disciplines, including geophysics, geochemistry, geochemistry, geomorphology, paleontology, petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, archaeology, biology, climatology and geology. this book is based on the paper i presented to the interdisciplinary science and engineering at the colorado school of mines in april 1999. the goal of that presentation was to describe the principles and practices of systems simulation that have been used by geoscientists to address many complex problems in the earth’s surface. in this paper i give a broad overview of the challenges and applications of systems simulation for geoscientists, and in particular emphasize the role of systems simulation in understanding the evolution of the earth’s surface, the processes that form the surface, and the processes that control the dynamics of the surface. i also describe how systems simulation may be used to obtain reliable knowledge of the earth’s surface, and how simulation can be used to provide insight into the processes that shaped the earth’s surface. i also discuss the application of simulation to the earth’s surface in the petroleum industry.
the paper is about the development of a simulation system for dynamic representation of a biosphere system based on principles of systems thinking. since the paper is based on the approach of systems thinking it can be used not only for the analysis of the biosphere system, but also for the development of the simulation system itself.
in todays fast-paced world everything changes fast and new challenges requires new solutions, which should be more universal, flexible and provide more possibilities to react to the continuous changes. the same situation is with simulation modeling solutions and tools. to effectively address new issues and challenges simulation modeling tools should be more flexible, more powerful and provide seamless integration of various simulation approaches.
