So, even though the company made my system pretty in the same ways it provided the inspiration for the speakers, I think that there is a definite subtext to this project — the longer and better three years spent improving on the previous models yield a higher degree of sonic refinement, and an improved isolation and transparency for such an efficient speaker. Whether this is on purpose, or just a happy accident, is a problem we can debate another time. But in any case, the result is a system with a more beautiful sound, a better balance of musicality and three-dimensionality, and a broader and deeper soundstage. With this particular system, though, time also works against me, as youll see.

There has been a great amount of hype about the Gold 100. (I didnt hear them in operation, so Im glad to have a plain old review in front of me. Their high price caused me to wait.) One even believes that Monitor Audio has just gone pure gold and that it is the quintessential reference speaker. (Which is why I love the Gold 200-and-300.) Its a nice idea, but as the system is based on many reference-class components, not to mention that the midrange tuner I use the board be more forgiving to the resulting sound quality, I have to offer more than just the sound so modest Gold speakers can make.

Further, the outer portions of the sealed ports are textured for increased air-flow. Indeed, according to Monitor Audio, the Gold 300s provides approximately 84 dB of high-frequency rejection with forward firing. Or, put another way, the speaker effectively filters out external noise, ensuring a high level of audio clarity.
I like how the speaker has a set of lighted trim dots on the back panel to indicate each of the tweeters and midrange drivers. This is the kind of thing that should be a standard feature for all top-shelf audiophile speakers. Its also a good idea to stick with neutral-white lightings, as the gold inlays on this particular model take on a brighter tint. After all, the type of speaker that might benefit from the gold anodizing isnt necessarily one that wears bright-gold parts.
The accompanying black and gold speaker stands (their name is a mouthful) are made from brushed steel, each with a sleek collar and base finish, set on parquet-like black composite feet. The stands are stable and quite heavy at 44 pounds.
As befits its claim to great sound, Monitor Audio was able to arrange a very pleasant intermingling of the various elements of the Gold series. C-CAM tweeter help, of course, with high-frequency sounds. The Gold300 is probably the best example of Monitor Audios multivoice, three-way tower format. But this isnt the complete story, as the crossovers are also selective. Their pattern is a compromise that allows the cabinet to preserve good bass impact while not affecting top-end performance. I wasnt pleased with the Gold200s bass response. I prefer a little more beef, and theres plenty of it in the Gold200s cabinet. There is certainly more apparent air in the midrange and highs. But bass volume was generally good if not always full-bodied. I was somewhat surprised to find out that Monitor Audios electronics do not always put the emphasis on sound quality, but on the musical experience. Beyond producing flat, smooth midbass, the Gold200s ability to reproduce music has been aided by a host of technology. The power amp, for example, adjusts its power output so that, for example, those low notes that (usually) start to get sibilant at 35 watts of amp power suddenly become pleasant in the Gold200s at just 15 watts. And my female editor found the subsonic impact quite different in the Gold200 than in any other speaker (other than Monitor Audio) she has heard.
