One thing I cannot understand why do some people object gun control. Gun licensing is not taking away guns from people, it's to train people to protect themselves perfectly. Background checking is done so that criminals don't get guns. What's wrong with gun registry? Records are kept so that if any lost gun is found, the police can return the lost one to the owner of the gun.
If any of these people cared about keeping people safe they would fix Chicago and California.
Constitutional questions aside, let's look at just the practicality of this. With an estimated 357 million firearms in the US right now if we split that up evenly per day per every 5 years that's around 200,000 background checks and written exams PER DAY that the federal government is going to have to process (and that's if you can get your license renewed on both Saturday and Sunday), and that's just for already existing firearms, a number that will increase every year. That's over a million licenses a week from a federal government that has a multiple years long backlog of immigration forms for fewer than a million incidences of illegal immigration a year. And you thought the line at the DMV just to renew your driver's license was bad.
