Many thanks to Audi Bacon for taking the time to give a read to my review about Signat[u]l Player Hq (SPH), I did not realise that I was one of the stars of this elite review, Cool. I do note a few things in your review, and I am impressed to learn that my experiences are virtually identical to yours. However, the issue that I have is that I am using ReSound’s Commuter DAC and have done for years (years). and have never considered configuring HM to sound better than Commuter, and this was no different when I made my selection. As I said, I was not trying to compare HMS to Commuter, rather, to compare the upgrade to Magnex.

1. Since our setup is primarily a SACD player, the lossless audio seems to be more preferable. Do you think this might be an issue? The PCM audio is a bit rolled off, so I am going to try to get the DAC firmware configured to handle the lossless output, and use the PCM for what it is, stereo.

If all you need is an audio player that reads WAV/AIFF and gets DSD-256 out of them, go with a USB DAC such as the Linn DUNU Audio Denon D22. Excellent value for the money as it barely takes up any desktop space and plays audio with very little distortion. I can play tunes from a few years back and they sound great. Some of the issues you describe with the DACs are totally eliminated: no hum, noise, clicks and poor bass response, etc.

A detailed review. I looked at the Phoenix as well. I added a USB DAC (Audiogeek Finn+ DAC) to a system and ended up using the plug in at work where I had to provide free music and streaming online. The player was totally unusable. On the plus side, the quality of the audio from the player was so low that it was not far off from using a computer. The DAC made a difference. The magic is the ability to switch off the additional software. The SFTP wouldn’t work otherwise. I would not suggest that the Phoenix is suitable for DJing in the sense that it will not work with CDJs or CDJs with USB audio cards, but it should work fine in other respects. I think it would be of great use for streaming over mobile networks.

to the earlier add, if you already have a few of the older (or outdated) chord dacs you might wish to test hqplayer with one of them first to see how it performs with that particular dac. i dont know exactly how a chord dac is limited by the tt scaler, but it might be lower than what the full chord would be capable of.
if this is the case with your chord dacs, then you can use the full chord as a reference and use the information here to determine which of these upscaling options is best for your situation. its been a while since i reviewed the chord, but they are definitely the best sounding dacs on the market. it appears that no matter how much they improve the chord, there is still a limitation, so that leaves upscaling as the only way to get the chord to sound better. obviously if you are happy with the chord sound, then you dont need to use hqplayer.
there is a lot to unpack and a lot of value in this review. unfortunately, it has been my experience that hqplayer has the least to add to the chord set of dacs because they effectively limit upscaling to pcm input and the tt scaler is optimized for that.
hq player is pretty good. i’ve only used it for about a month, but it was a nice surprise when it finally (after months of frustration) started working. now that it’s working, i don’t really see the need to switch.
