videowave is much more lightweight than cinemagic, and i was surprised to find that it didn’t require a dvd burner to be run. this software works very well indeed, though, and can be used to make very basic videos without any real problems. i wasn’t able to make videos using this software without any problems with the version i was testing on, but obviously this will vary with different versions of windows and different processors. you can download the software for free from the roxio website, but it’s restricted to a single use only, so make sure you don’t go through and use the software after you’ve paid for it.
if you want to take advantage of hd, then you’ll need the roxio creator hd suite. there are two main components to this, the creator hd suite itself and the roxio creator avchd upgrade. the avchd upgrade is a plug-in program for roxio videowave that will allow you to convert your vhs tapes into avchd format, allowing you to edit hd footage from those tapes in windows movie maker (and other programs), for editing purposes. the roxio creator hd suite will then allow you to convert the resulting hd footage into a wmv or avi file, and this file can then be inserted into a wmv project and edited just like any other wmv file. the roxio creator avchd upgrade will allow you to convert your vhs tapes into avchd format (again, using the roxio creator hd suite), and it will also allow you to edit those vhs tapes in windows movie maker. this will allow you to edit avchd footage in windows movie maker and other editing packages. you can download the software for free from the roxio website, but you’ll also have to pay for the avchd upgrade which will allow you to convert your vhs tapes into avchd footage.
one last thing to note, if youre using roxio creator 2009 as a dvd authoring app, remember that it doesnt have a dvd-r/rw burner built-in. youll have to use the older roxio dvd burning software in order to burn a disc that will hold the files you create with creator 2009. ive never personally had any issues using roxio creator 2009 to create dvd-rs using the roxio free dvd authoring software, but you may need to make sure you have the correct settings set up for your burner in order to avoid errors, or you may want to also use roxio creator 2008 for this task.
creator 2009 takes a lot of inspiration from the free windows movie maker, but theres no denying that its a big improvement on its predecessor. the more complex features are easily accessible and intuitive, and there is a great deal of content on offer in the roxio store. plus, creator 2009 is a lot more stable than the older roxio video editing software, and theres no doubt that this roxio application is a good fit for those who want to take home movies to a new level.
theres no doubt that creator 2009 is a big improvement on roxio creator 2008, and its now the best dvd authoring software for windows. so why did the site almost completely ignore it? perhaps its because roxio has changed the name of its software suite to roxio creator, and it seems that roxio software packages do not sell as well without the traditional installer installers, or maybe it just doesnt fit the general trend for user review sites. however, i do feel like the roxio suite was an easy candidate for an unbiased review, and i hope that they will reconsider their policy in the future and give us more roxio products to review. anyway, its time to get back to watching those movies.
