  What causes a slow blink of my Raspberry Pi’s LEDs?

  I have a Raspberry Pi which runs a CLI based game that uses an OLED screen and a bunch of LEDs for status information.
  This works very well on a normal computer, but on the Raspberry Pi, I can make the LEDs blink once every two or three seconds, and that’s it.
  I’m running Debian Squeeze on a Raspberry Pi 2.
  Here’s what it looks like:

  The game is written in Python and runs on the GPIO port. The game does most of its logic in a loop on the background, so the GUI (using tkinter) freezes. I have tried a lot of things to troubleshoot this, and have been unsuccessful.
