The cast style was another popular style for chandeliers from the late 1800s to the early 1930s. It can be established or determined that a surface finish is plating by submerging it in a suitable liquid and observing the base metal color. Any change in hue or appearance is likely to be caused by plating. By the same token, patina can be caused not only by (often sublimated) chemical reaction during the plating process but also by reaction with the air in which the metal is immersed.

The technology described as “plating,” which had been used to give many metals a golden appearance, was the first to be developed. The initial metal to be treated was copper or brass, and the technology was eventually extended to other metals. The metals to be plated were immersed in a plating bath containing a chemical. The bath was maintained at a temperature to bring out the color of the plated metal. It is probable that two distinctly different processes were applied to make these early examples of flat-plating. One may have been a simple immersion process in which the metal was allowed to remain in the bath for as long as the surface color desired was reached. The other was a process in which fresh, hot plating liquid was constantly added until a desired depth was achieved. This latter process is still used for certain types of plating, and it is also true that any one metal can be plated in either of two ways.
