once youre done with the game, reduce the power limit and the temperature limit to its lowest values. this will give you the best performance for the cpu and vram. now, you can safely restart your computer. at least, thats the best way to test overclocking. any overclocking can potentially cause your laptop to fail, or at least, crash during the time of the test.
if youre on a laptop, it might also take quite a few seconds before it starts. so be patient. after a few seconds, youll see the screen start to blink to indicate that your laptop is ready for overclocking.
after a few seconds, the screen will show a loading message. this can take anything from 1 to 2 minutes, depending on your laptop and the overclock settings. if youre lucky, you might just see the message that your overclock is successful after 5-10 seconds. then your cpu and gpu are running at their new overclock.
if youre lucky, your laptop wont crash. if it does, no worries! theres always a way around it. the only problem is that you cant always see your overclock settings in gpu-z. what you can do is to use any software that displays the overclock settings. unfortunately, you cant see the overclock settings in windows 7, so you need to use a different version of windows for that.
now that we have selected our target, we need to click “apply” to make our changes. if you have a bios screen, youll see it open automatically, and if you dont youll need to hit esc or fn+f12 (if you have a different key, feel free to specify) and open it. hit ok to confirm, and youll get a confirmation box telling you that its now working. afterburner will show you your target settings in the main window, and youll see the graphics card overclocked. if you go into the dropdown menu next to the clock settings, youll see that you can choose between three different methods of gpu overclocking:
- vcore overclock – increase the power voltage (vcore) of your gpu. this will make the gpu run faster by increasing the power it needs to perform. you can use this method for a small overclock, or you can use it for a larger one. vcore is not a fixed voltage, as you can lower the voltage by 1% or 2% by using a single number. so, for example, a vcore of 1.1375v will give you a 50 mhz overclock.
- fan rpm overclock – increase the fan speed to keep the gpu cool. fans speed has no fixed values, and you can use them to overclock gpus by a fixed amount. again, you can use this for a smaller or larger overclock.
- memory overclock – this is a special method that will overclock memory (video ram) for you, giving you a boost in performance. it does this by increasing the clock speed of your video memory. it doesnt work for all hardware, but its a good method for increasing your fps. although, you can use it for a smaller or larger overclock, or use it as your main method.
you will need the msi afterburner program. it will work great on a windows pc. the installation size is just over 20mb, so you will need to use a cd/dvd drive. you can burn the msi afterburner installer to a cd or dvd and carry it around with you or you can add a disc drive to your computer and install it from there. don’t forget to activate the msi afterburner program if you are installing from an external cd or dvd. you can do this in the msi afterburner software or you can do it in the windows control panel.
you may choose to use the msi afterburner gui but have a command line install with the msi afterburner you just downloaded. there are still a ton of other useful features in afterburner that you can’t access through the gui.
for display overclocking, i’d recommend leaving most settings where they are now and not touching them to avoid creating a dependency in a game you can’t easily get rid of. since you cant change your resolution for the time being, you should be fine with high enough settings to get a good framerate.
as always, its important to start slowly when overclocking your video card raise the core clock rate incrementally by 5% and test for any unusual graphical artifacts like glitches, streaks, or even crashes. at a level of 5%, performance should stay stable, but you likely wont see much improvement. but this minor overclock helps you quickly check for any potential issues.
generally i dont take any overclocking above 50mhz when dealing with titan xp since the boost gains are usually not worth the small instability. it takes some trial and error to know your cards limits. for example, if you overclock the core to 100mhz or higher, you’ll encounter stability problems with msi afterburner. you can ignore this situation if you know your card and if you have a reliable way to disable msi afterburner.
