As with Lounge Lizard EP2, there’s a choice of 29 real-wood finishes, including authentic ash, mahogany, maple, and rosewood, plus seven ghost patterns based on these (see Lounge Lizard EP2). There are now 30 types of woodgrain, plus 12 additional bass and treble tones – but not an imitation of woodgrain in the luster variations. Finally, there are four new decay types, including something called The Silent Type, so you can easily mix decay types during play for those occasions when you really want to be silent for a moment. The EQ module has been significantly upgraded as well, as you’ll see in the next chapter.
As usual, Lounge Lizard EP3 is certainly a great-value instrument, and with two months of close use, I was still regularly discovering and tweaking new settings and features of the instrument.
A few reminders before the review of Lounge Lizard EP4: many of the video demonstrations in the book were performed using an 8GB iPod Nano as the tablet display, so the videos may look slightly different to the standard desktop-based playback (and the PC/Mac recording may not include an offstage mic of course). Also, it’s important to note that I have deliberately not included video of my own live playing of Lounge Lizard in this book, in order to avoid being accused of performing a self-hijack of your instrument (after all, although I have a MacBook Pro, I’m a real old-skool Windows user, and I never even open the OSX Control Panel without screaming with laughter at the hilarious attempts Apple designers make to get us to use their OS system).
As with previous versions of Lounge Lizard, a host of editable parameters are at your disposal: a pitch bend slide and volume envelope, echo, octave ladder, resonance, and articulation. But what makes this release so noteworthy is the inclusion of an innovative Auto-Mute feature that automatically cuts the key pitch whenever a preset finishes playing. While this prevents overusing and overamplification of those patches, it also affords users to’rewind’ their work and experiment with it even more as a result.
The equivalent of an all-encompassing version of today’s classic organs, Lounge Lizard EP-4 comes loaded with a huge selection of authentic Oberheim and Roland analog and digital effects, giving users complete control over their synth and arpeggiator. What’s more, creating your own effects is easy thanks to the visual and tactile nature of the interface. As a general rule, Lounge Lizard effects are easily distinguished into 3 categories: Auto, with its parameters on-board; Master, those that are more visually visible; and Triggers, which require a mouse to work with.
Indeed, with so many parameters and samples to choose from, one is bound to get lost in the jungle of presets. But that’s where Lounge Lizard’s Save As function comes in play. Using an intuitive tree view, users can save and load as many presets as they need.
While the expansionist approach has certainly been the hallmark of Lounge Lizard to date, the new version of Lounge Lizard EP-4 revamps the interface for a sleeker look and feel, featuring a series of beautiful, simple, and yet powerful sound palettes.
