Marijuana could be a gateway drug just like any other mood-altering substance could be. Of COURSE it is possible that a person using/abusing one chemical might go on to use other, mood-altering substances. That does not necessarily mean that the use of the first one is the reason people go on to use other, more potent mood-altering drugs.
Oxycodone and hydrocodone are 'gateway drugs' to heroin use/abuse. A person might never have used any other types of meds/drugs, but were prescribed one of the above two pain meds following an injury or a surgery. And when their doctors won't prescribe more of them, sometimes people (who may already be addicted to these drugs) will turn to street heroin to get their 'fix'!
And Big Pharma – as well as Big Health Care insurance companies – absolutely knows this and they don't care. As long as they are profiting from these codeine-types of drugs, they will continue to urge providers to write prescriptions for them.
