Have you ever encountered a need to capture subtitles from an avi file?
You came across a copy of a movie in a language you don’t master and the subtitles are not available. You have two options: to find someone to translate it for you; or to find and use an already existing translation. We will talk here about the second option.
Most of the subs available came from the dvd source. But a lot of movies came out only on VHS tape or are just broadcasted on some tv channel. If they are ripped or captured we get an avi with hardburned subtitles.
They are there, already well translated (hopefully) but is there any way to get them into some well known format (sub, srt) without too much manual work? This question bothered me for a while and after a looong time of searching, learning c++ and some clumsy coding I’ve developed a Virtualdub filter that does just that; it captures subs into idx/vob file (subpictures and time codes). This vob file has to be ripped with SubRip and we get a subtitle.

* You must have the beginning and end frames of the subtitles.
* These frames should be exactly the same for all languages on the same video.
* The subtitles should be in the following time format: HH:MM:SS:FF. This means that the frames of the subtitle must be in the right succession. The subtitles must be in the format HH:MM:SS:00 ff ff ff where 00 stands for the frames and ff stands for the frames end.

The basic process is:
The AVI file is loaded into the filter
The “Stream options” (e.g. video frame capture rate, video frame format etc) are configured and the capture begins

The subtitle conversion usually failed. I tried to capture a video file that has about 15 seconds of video, and the subtitle was about 4 or 5 lines. When I tried to convert to srt, it often failed to do so. I tried to increase the subtitles conversion by adding more resources, but it always failed.
I would like to know if there’s any other way of doing this. Any suggestion or information will be greatly appreciated.

This can be done without the subrip plugin. If you have the right video editing software you can have all subtitles converted to a new one format.
For example with Adobe Premiere you can use the “Text to Speech” function to convert the subtitles to an srt file. Unfortunately the convert function will only convert one language at a time. But it is still better than nothing.
