I took the little gold tip off as well as the rubber insulation.. are all the wires supposed to be INSIDe the rubber? If so, which colors?

What if I accidentally pulled the contact fitting out of the cartridge? It is a nail-shaped metal plug with a rubber bushing/gasket around it and inside the now-open barrel of the cartridge is a thin metal wire. I think I only need to push the bushing back into the barrel, but what to do about that wire?
