hausa literature (hausa: gabbayat) is an important part of hausa culture. the hausa language is spoken by more than 40 million people in northern nigeria, southern niger, southern chad and western sudan. there is a vast body of hausa literature from the middle ages to present day. hausa is one of the largest bantu languages, and is the most widely spoken in nigeria. this is because it is both a national language and lingua franca, and has a very rich history. hausa literature, like that in other languages, uses many different forms of expression. hausa literature could be described as a mixture of prose, poetry, proverbs, songs, drama, literature and the like. i am going to focus on hausa literature in two sections. i will focus on hausa literature in general in the first section. i will focus on poetry in the second section.

the first book i read on my own was the bible and literature by gerald o’collins. i remember that i fell in love with all those beautiful, romantic poets and a feeling of awe at the power of the language. i still read this book almost every year and i have recommended it to many who are studying literature and history. it is a wonderful book. i also recommend the bible and literature by j.b. phillips.
the distinguished cambridge professor of english literature, richard bentley, once said “although i am a man of learning, i am also a man of reading. i love to read”. i hope that this selection of readings will stimulate readers of any age to read for pleasure and for their own intellectual development. in the following years, i hope to expand my selection to include more of the great writers of the romantic period and the moderns.
the early english novel developed out of the medieval romance, and was characterized by a plot that was secondary to the expression of a moral and religious theme. the first novel written in the english language was piers plowman (1362-67), a religious allegory by william langland, but this was not until the fifteenth century that the english novel emerged as a distinctive literary form. richard fitzrafford (1323-1386) was the first writer to introduce the english love story into his work, and in the 15th century geoffrey chaucer (1340-1400) and thomas malory (1410-1471) introduced the characters, conventions, and events of modern english romance. however, until the middle of the sixteenth century, the novel was largely confined to theological allegory.
