despite being a director whose career was going nowhere, raghavans s onscreen work here is breathtakingly confident, while his vibrant art-house sensibilities onscreen relationships through the series of flashbacks have to be seen and appreciated to be believed. its possible that no film has represented an artistic leap forward with such brazen glee. its equally possible that no film was this tone-deaf in its portrait of human conflict, a masterpiece of condemnation and indifference. when raghavans vinod trumps it all, its as if he forced himself to make a better film than anything else hes done, because he didnt know how else to do it. its a series of audacious failures that form an artistic statement unto themselves.

youd never mistake the director of a vijan-movie for a vijan-movie, but the hooded figure for raghavans first venture is unmistakable. its a tough act to follow, a tough act to top, and a tough act to fall short of. but agent vinods success is that he is agent vinod – its a continuing role with which to tl;dr the audience to sleep.

hats off to raghavan for taking that on. its something of an irony that he ended the misadventure that was agent vinod with one of the greatest hindi films of all time – 2012s imtiaz ali-directed dil chahta hai is essentially the same film, just ten years younger.

raghav and the team did an excellent job with costumes. some of them are impeccable, and some of them are dreadful. its all a matter of taste of course. and since were speaking about the costumes, there are some more than the others that warrant mention. lata mangeshkar has a small cameo in the film. her character is named after her. she gets to sing a song she has recorded for the film. it was composed by amit trivedi, and his music is one of his most musical works to date. not shraddha kapoor, who is a relative newcomer, but none of this matters. for her, the audiences focus is not on what shes doing, it is on the man who shes romancing. she plays a sassy, bitchy action- adventure heroine and this is something we have never seen before. it is important to note that in that, theres a lot of potential for her in the future. vinod was good in parts, but she was a revelation. and her dance abilities are excellent. anand tiwari was also one of the delectable scenes in the movie. he plays an elderly man who is the father of the film. he is killed off in a particularly dramatic fashion that for its time was quite unprecedented in the hindi movie industry. since the last quarter of the movie is largely set in india, one of the only two male leads from the city is played by someone who hails from the country. though he isnt as emphatic as anand tiwari, theres something alluring about him. the look of him matches very well with the film, and he is at the right place at the right time.
the cast is good, but unfortunately the other half arent. first up is a relative newcomer. he plays a young guy who doesnt want to be in the army. he gets caught up in a set of strange circumstances that allow him the opportunity to ingratiate himself with the protagonist. but he does so in a completely inane manner. he is an absolute disaster. his interpretation of the love scenes make them look awkward and amateurish. the actress playing his girlfriend is a former miss india. we werent impressed by her performance in dabangg 3. however, she does do a better job in this. there isnt much to say about the rest of the cast. in the last half, we see some of the more famous faces in the business. katrina kaif and kunal khemu are both fine, but theyre very much like filler. we think this was the point of the inclusion of some of these cameos. we feel there is an undercurrent of dissatisfaction with india in the film, and it is throughout the whole thing. this is not a nationalist film. its not even a film about india at all. this is a film about a random character from india who goes to randomly chosen locations in the world. i cannot see why the film was about anything other than that at all. agent vinod is a mess, and it isnt helped by the fact that it runs for a long time. youd think that editing and editing some scenes would have made it a bit shorter. it doesnt work. this is one of the most overstuffed ventures ever filmed by a bollywood production house.
