Florida Man Sentenced to 11 years in Prison for Transporting Exotic Animal That Killed 2 Children in 2012

A 45-year-old Orlando man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for failing to properly secure an exotic pet he owned that killed two children five years ago.

Borys Grubaczewicz was sentenced Wednesday after a federal grand jury in Florida indicted him last year on one count of animal cruelty.

According to court documents, on Sept. 2, 2010, 5-year-old Arianna and 10-year-old Scott Hunter were mauled to death by a Sumatran tiger while at their father’s home in Warner Robins.

Authorities who were initially investigating the circumstances and discovered that the tiger, which was owned by Grubaczewicz, had escaped.

Following their investigation, prosecutors said a lawsuit was filed against Grubaczewicz, who defaulted on his appeal and turned himself in later on.

Grubaczewicz, who is out on a $100,000 bond and under strict probation, was also charged with failure to vaccinate his tiger and owning an unapproved exotic dog in Feb. 2011.

The tiger was euthanized by animal control in Florida in February.

The Hunter brothers were airlifted to a children’s hospital in Atlanta, where Scott Hunter was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Arianna and another sibling were with him, but were airlifted to the same hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The other brother was not injured.

Grand jury charges that Grubaczewicz “willfully and unlawfully” did not keep his then-tiger in a secure and suitable enclosure between March 2009 and September 2010, when it escaped and attacked two children.

Authorities said Grubaczewicz told them he had the tiger “for a couple of years,” according to the documents.

“CBP also apprehended a record number of family units along the Southwest border in October 2019,” the report stated. “Since January 2018, CBP has apprehended an average of 5,600 unaccompanied children at the Southwest border per month. This number is up from an average of 1,076 in January 2018.”

The rising numbers of migrant children prompted the Trump administration to send billions of dollars of military equipment to the U.S.-Mexico border to assist agents in the detection and apprehension of illegal immigrants.

“For the safety and security of our border community, CBP will deploy up to 210 Army National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers from the 24th Combat Aviation Brigade and the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division to the southwest border in Arizona and New Mexico,” Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said in a statement.

The number of migrant children apprehended at the U.S. border last month was surpassed by the number of family units apprehended.

About 60 percent of the families had children — 24,400 — and about 40 percent were adults without children.

Most of the children cross the border in families.

A separate federal report found that Texas is now the top destination for illegal immigrants, followed closely by California.
