Jonathan Riley (1599 – 13 July 1671) was a Church of England bishop.
Life
He was born at Betchworth, Surrey, the second son of Gilbert Riley, member of parliament for Hertfordshire and Tonbridge, and his wife, Dorothy, daughter and co-heiress of Sir William de Billingford of Betchworth. When Gilbert Riley died, his children divided his large landed estate: Jonathan and his brother Sir James divided Betchworth, and James inherited Willey in Surrey and Tuttington in Northamptonshire. Jonathan went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, at 14, was elected to Corpus Christi College in 1709, was a close friend of John Tillotson and Edmund Gibson. He graduated M.A. 1619, B.D. 1626, and D.D. 1638.
After the death of his father Gilbert Riley in 1629, his eldest brother took possession of Tuttington Castle, and bought it from his sister’s husband, but neglected it and left it ruinous. As a result, it was sold in 1635, and the fines were applied to maintain King Charles I at Betchworth. Jonathan Riley lived in the house, which was greatly dilapidated, and added to it in a lavish manner. On his marriage, by the end of 1641, the fine house on the road to Tunbridge Wells became the seat of a large household, under the command of his mother’s kinsman, Sir Christopher Platt.
Riley retired with his wife after the trial of Charles I and settled at Betchworth, living in great splendour. In 1655 he was made Lord Chief Justice of the North, holding that office for five years
