6:50 the heart attacks were caused by smoking and a low fat diet. We erroneously assumed that the heart attacks were caused by blockages in the arteries and that the blockages were caused by the consumption of fat. Both were incorrect.
1:30 I'm watching this video again because it's such a great video. Before seeing this video I was always of the opinion that the emotional eater story was fictitious.
But I hate listening to you say, "in certain populations." Just because some people don't become addicted doesn't make the substance nonaddictive. And there's no population without addicts, so what are you saying?
And there's still much controversy around the subject of why some people become addicted and others do not. In today's society, simply being an endomorph means that your doctor is going to recommend weight loss whether you need it or not, leading to yo-yo dieting and weight gain.
It's still possible that going carnivore could eliminate the possibility of emotional eating, by improving mood and eliminating cravings.
1:30 In certain populations? Please don't do that. If an assumption doesn't apply to every White, Black, or Latino then what good is it to a doctor or consumer?
8:50 It's not impossible to be heavy and healthy. You know that.
53:00 and I'm curious as to why you felt it necessary to point out that we are talking about a subset of the population when that subset could possibly include everyone that we know and interact with.
I need a resource that shows carb intake in the 1950s was 5%
I think bacon is addictive. 😁
Such a fantastic interview!
In blog you mentioned Kifer milk and hard cheese while on Keto. I make Kifer had home. The Kifer grains eats the sugar in the milk therefor it is almost sugar free. I do fasting no food till 12 noon. Then I eat between 12 and 6pm. Can I drink HOME MADE Kifer???
That's me in a nut shell 🙁 I loved snacks & desserts too much became over weight . Found Keto lost weight improved my health . After 3 years of maintaining this weight lose , I decided to quit smoking cigarettes' . Bam here I am 3 years later . non smoker but over weight again . Still on my Keto journey , but addicted to snacking all over again . Needing the sensation of something in my hand & mouth .. Of course with Keto foods .. nuts , cheese , LC desserts , dark chocolate etc .. too many calories .
Wow. This must be mainstream information
One of the best ever,,,,Carbohydrate TURD haha
5% of calories came from carbs before the 1950s (time: 17:30)? I'm sorry. I'm researching foods from the 1940s, and I don't see that at all. I see a lot of root vegies and whole breads, which are carbs. Maybe in South Africa that was the norm? I don't know. But I do agree that after refined sugar and refined breads were brought into the mix, that's where the real decline came in.
Terrific video! I wish Dr. Cywes had answered the interviewer's question about choosing low carb (but not keto) vs keto! His response didn't address the question at all…and it's the question I've been asking too!
Just because you have a flat tire your not going shoot out the other 3 tires ,your just going to fix the tire and keep going.
I have posted previously on other presentations by Dr. Cywes. I am a true food addict. A true food addict can and will overeat everything and anything. I can overeat salad dressings, steak, shrimp, chicken, you name it. In fact I never had a problem really with flour, sugar, carbs. My addiction was fat and salt. While I think Dr. Cywes is years ahead of his time in looking at the addictive nature of carbs and changing behaviors as opposed to just doing surgery, I would love to see him consider that ALL foods are addictive to the addict NOT just carbohydrates. Also there IS a recovery program based on Alcoholics Anonymous for food addicts called aptly enough FA or Food Addicts in Recovery. We used the big book of AA as well as AA's 24 hour book and other literature. Google food addicts in recovery for the website and get started at a meeting near you.
Dr. Cywes is just across town from me but unfortunately, not affordable for someone on SSDI and Medicare. I'll just watch all his Youtubes and learn what I can. (Of course, in addition to Fung, Berry, etc)
Excellent video!
This is me and I so wish I could find a doctor like this to help me that accepted my insurance
His approach is great. Relationship with carbs is key. But ehi there is a huge difference between a cup of rice and the sugar hidden in industrial ice creams. I can have 70gr of rice and some veggies and that small amount of sugar makes me eat less food in general, I do sport. When I force myself to be zero carb ever I end with overeating. Whole starches in very small quantities and not every day are not bad at all…sugary food and fruits in winter is a different thing. Btw I am one that can drink a beer and stop, not becoming alcoholic. So I appreciate his psycological approach, he is a real doctor, but some differenciations have to be made. Demonizing a macro is never a good idea, putting it in its limits is good. Excess of sugar is causing most of the diseases still a 60% carbs diet is pushed, that is crazy
This is so amazing. Thank you!
Dr. Cywes was my weight loss doc/surgeon. He is the best doctor in this field, during your appointment he is so thorough and passionate. He talks to you one on one never in a hurry but you get the low carbohydrate LIFE STYLE. You learn how to live a low carb life. I did lap band surgery 10 years ago the best thing ever. I lost 120lb, My band was removed last year my weight never came back because this doctor made sure you understood carbohydrates. Just like he's speaking in this video you get the same knowledge/lecture every appointment. I got my life back. I love Dr. Cywes
Excellent!!
He is one of my favorites thanks for sharing!!
❤️
Making any single macronutrient public enemy #1 (HFCS, fat, gluten, carbs) doesn't seem very productive. In Robert's case, substituting 'packaged food' for 'carbohydrates' might get vegetables off the hit-list, unless of course, that is the message (ala Steven Gundry).
Regarding how bariatric surgery can cure diabetes almost instantly (at least for the first 5 years), and therefore cannot be attributed to diet/weight-loss.. any thoughts on what 'special' mechanism is going on? Break nutrition #6 for example, talks about the hybrid ((1) restrictive (2) malabsorptive) bariatric surgery (aka Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) ). It's suggested that when undigested food reaches the ileum / L-Cells, it seems to stimulate the hindgut to increase hormone signaling (ex. GLP-1 and PYY). In short, the surgery doesn't normalize hormones, it instead makes an opposite imbalance that leads to the reversal of diabetes which could not be achieved without surgery (i.e. diet alone).

One of the best videos I've ever heard. Thank you
Everyone should watch this!
