Wanting to visit Chappelle was an unanticipated treat for me, though my hype surrounding his stand up was dampened slightly after seeing the upsetting, depressing nature of his new show. In the past he seemed to mostly, but not exclusively, play to the Black community, the lack of which still exists. What he seemed to mostly play for was people of colour, and what he did well was take the shit that was being heaped on them in the media, their houses of worship, and in a community that was still largely controlled by men, and write a complicated, hilarious, and moving retelling of the journey from being a Black woman or man in America to who they are now. At the start of his first two specials, (the first of which was set to previews on HBO, the second set to air on Comedy Central in July) Chappelle is a little unhinged. His jokes are one-sided, he is more or less monotone, and he fails to deliver much more than the de rigueur punchlines expected from a stand-up.
By framing them as a group of privileged (by white) men who can’t handle the truth, Chappelle mocks them for not being able to handle the truth. It’s the truth they are failing to hear and it’s the truth of their refusal to listen to their own gut that makes them uneasy, not Chappelle. Once Chappelle puts his foot down, theres no turning back, so he must use his stage to bury them alive.
For example, when he makes his argument about Trump, Chappelle brings up Nelson Mandela and the death of his wife, and then asks why he was needed at the Paris gala. Unlike the situation ofNelson Mandela and his wife, Chappelle is not an elected official. In fact, he has never run for public office. So why is he standing for president of the United States?
as a comedian, dave chappelle is quite the dope. he knows how to write, how to use his material as a vehicle for commentary and opinion, and above all, how to make people laugh. he’s a great example of someone who is able to bend and shape his art, growing and changing with time and circumstance. he’s also become an expert at playing to the crowd. it’s easy to see why he was such a sensation back in the ’90s, and why he is still a hilarious, compelling, and important voice in comedy today. –tom keogh
