Collapsed Lung, 11 Broken Bones, Dead Olympic Dream, and Fighting Health Insurance is the Worst Part

I was brought to an ER unconscious and I still don’t know why that bill isn’t covered for $150000. I think a lot about the moment where I went to a different …

  1. This is absolutely crazy. I'm not saying my health insurance is perfekt (Germany), but I'm almost certain I would have had a better experience, if something similar happened to me. Best of luck to you Phil!

  2. I had a crash here in Australia 4 weeks ago. Busted clavicle & scapula. Surgery on the clavicle. Five days in hospital. Didn't put my hand in my pocket when I left (including for the painkillers). $0.
Feel for you, your entire country is broken

  3. A bill like that would literally destroy the average person's life here in Australia, yet so many Americans keep saying they don't want "socialised healthcare". Ok then, keep putting your citizens so deep into debt (for having an accident) that they see no other way out than suicide.

  4. I have been hit by two cars on my bike and the last was the most straightforward being a hit and run driver. If you have auto insurance you have medical payments for any reason under that policy generally maxing out at 100k. They paid my medical bills.

  5. Damn I’m happy to live in France, our social security system makes it that if you go to the hospital you basically never have to pay

  6. Wonder if just putting money in a jar instead of giving it to the "insurance crooks" would be better? Keep fighting Phil and how about a Go Fund Me account? PEACE!!

  7. And there are people in the UK that think they'd be better off with US-type healthcare, f**king idiots. They probably voted for Brexit too.

  8. Best healthcare system in the world. Yeah right…….The current corona situation in the United States shows how the U.S system is a big freaking joke.

  9. Yup our countries health insurance and medical industry is inhumane. They don’t care for us at all. Fuck em.

  10. This is just so frustrating! Same thing in ZA (South Africa) You need a dam PHD to understand exactly what the insurance will pay. You end up having to purchase additional insurances (called GAP covers) to cover shortfalls in the original insurance, it's a total f-up. I wish I didn't need it, I hate the fact I need it and I hate it that they make it so difficult and cunning…

  11. Hey Phil. Good luck with this. Would a comparison with a UK professional cyclist and their treatment on the NHS be an interesting comparative story at some point? I am sure you know a few – and the immediate and high quality free care might counterpoint your experience? All the best.

  12. You said you wanted to pay and compensate the doctors. They don't get a dime of that money man. They have their salary. That 250k goes somewhere else. Sad to see your country has such a capitalistic health care system. And the arguments most americans make against european health care systems is the higher taxes in europe. But how much do you pay each month to have great (not average) health insurance? And how much to cover your 3 kids? Is the total sum out of your paycheck really that much different from that of normal taxes in say Norway or Sweden?

  13. I feel sorry for you, Phil! I live in Spain. We have high unemployment, low salaries compared to the US or other European countries like Germany or the UK and many other problems, but we have free, universal healthcare. I just can't wrap my head around your health system. It's so ludicrous I just can't fathom how it can be that so many people in the US support it.
I hope you can get things sorted out and go on with your life. Good luck!

  14. I live in Wellington NZ the ambulance is free and accidents are covered by ACC. Im very lucky they have patched me up more than once payed for my health care and cover 80% of my wages when im off work.

  15. Damn, feel so bad for Americans that have to worry about this shit, I'm Canadian, been to the hospital for various things, minor and major, dozens of times, never even thought about a bill or paying for anything.

  16. Access to free health care should be a universal right for everyone regardless of where they live, health care should not be a business. I look forward to see what changes happen after the pandemic. Your case is the one of millions of Americans and it is sad.

  17. Damn Phil, I'm sorry that you are having to deal with this. It sucks. Thank you for opening up and sharing something that is this personal. I appreciate you sharing this because people do need to know the pitfalls of our health insurance system. We all need to highlight the inequities that plague the system so that, hopefully, one day we can come up with something better that works for everyone.

  18. The US system is not designed to protect the patient. The best medical systems in the world are only for those that have unlimited funds. Its a joke that the race organizers only provide a 25k insurance policy when you look at your expenses. Hope you get through this its just so unjust that someone training to represent their country is placed in this situation. Governments want all the glory for their athletes winning medals yet take no financial responsibility for all of the blood sweat and tears shed in making it to the games. Looking at the current global financial situation proves that we are disposable and that governments only care about the bottom line. Once governments discover a way to make money from covid we will all be back at work regardless of how many people become infected.

  19. Both Biden and Trump support the current for-profit, multipayer deathcare scheme that Phil is currently enjoying…. aka Go-Fund-Me. Both parties oppose universal healthcare EVEN DURING A PANDEMIC! Nothing will change for any of you in Murica with Biden or Trump. And remember kids: the reason it's so bad is because Obama chose a republican healthcare plan known as the ACA, which is from republican think tank, The Heritage Foundation. Both parties are complicit in America's deathcare. That's why I live in single-payer Japan… Good luck!

  20. I’ve never had an experience this crazy, but my wife’s had a ton of emergency surgeries through no fault of her own, and the only thing that’s true is that you have to be your own ally. It’s entirely up to you and it sucks. I’m sorry man.

  21. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. I have a top-notch American employer-provided health insurance plan (you know, the kind you hear certain political figures toting as the pinnacle of health care). Half-way through my treatment, my insurance began denying my claims. This was for treatment I received 3x/week at a cost of over $500 / treatment. Plus medication that cost over $30,000 per refill. All told I had over 4 months worth of treatment denied. ALL IN-NETWORK. It took me over a year and a half to fight my insurance over it. I had thousands of pieces of mail. I wasted countless hours on the phone. I even had my employer's HR trying to help me fight it. Eventually I did prevail and my bills went away, long after my cancer was successfully treated. I suppose that makes me one of the lucky ones. But why does anyone need to go through this?

  22. Phil I hate to hear you going through this. Your Insurance companies and Hospitals are a gigantic scam and it is Joe Public that gets the shaft. "Choice" is over rated and the biggest lie of all. They charge hundreds for Saline (essentially salt water) without an issue. Criminals

  23. Glad I live in Taiwan the national health insurance here covers everything, only thing not covered is if you want a private room in the hospital (if not private you may need to share a room with 1 or 2 other people). Amazing system here and I think currently ranked no.1 in the world for healthcare

Also forgot to mention awesome riding on super quiet mountain roads with the smoothest asphalt!
