Double-walled, high pressure, flexible conduits of the prior art normally include a pair of concentric inner and outer tubular members which are axially spaced apart by an axially extending heat-shrinkable sleeve to form a bladder therebetween. The annular space between the outer and inner tubular members is evacuated by use of an annular core in the inner tubular member and an annular mandrel or cylinder in the outer tubular member. This core is usually a heat-shrinkable sleeve, which reduces the interior diameter of the inner tubular member to approximately one-quarter of the initial interior diameter thereof. The mandrel is placed over and around the core and the inner tubular member is fitted over the outer surface of the core. The inner tubular member, the core and the mandrel or cylinder are then expanded to force air and fluid out of the annular space between the two outer tubular members. When the mandrel or cylinder is withdrawn the inner and outer tubular members shrink together to form a high pressure conduit.
It has been found, however, that leakage occurs between the outer surface of the inner tubular member and the mandrel or cylinder. Since the outer surface of the inner tubular member contacts the mandrel or cylinder, any gas or fluid between the two is displaced therebetween. It is important to prevent such leakage because it would result in the ultimate loss of a relatively large quantity of air when the double-walled flexible conduit is in use.
