I have a table with over 1,000,000 rows in my db (about 3 gigabyte). The table has a.id field (integer) and a.parent_id field (integer).
I want to display the contents of the table in a table with each row containing a list of children.
I can do it by generating a list of ‘LEAVES’ of the data with parent_id = 0 and creating each row in a nested table in this structure
LEAVES

| column2
|…
| column99999
And then sorting the table by the LEAVES list.
It works fine but with over 1,000,000 rows it takes a long time. I’m looking for a better way to do this.
What would be a better way to do this?
I can’t use triggers to do this because I need to send a notification to a separate process in a different domain.

Get the rows for level zero
For every zero, get the list of non-zero parent rows
JOIN the lists together
You can accomplish all this in a single query, without the need to pre-sort the data:
