History
The first version of AutoCAD was called AutoPLAN and was introduced in December 1982. Developed by two college students at the University of Utah, AutoPLAN did not sell well due to the then extremely expensive price ($8,000) of entry-level personal computers. Subsequently, the two students released a version of AutoPLAN under the trade name of CAD/PLAN or CAD/PLAN Plus. The original version 1.0 of AutoCAD was released in December 1982.
Autodesk Inc. was established in 1983 and started offering CAD/PLAN Plus as a commercial software package. In 1986, Autodesk purchased CAD/PLAN Plus from its creators for $12 million. The new company, Autodesk, Inc. named its new CAD software AutoCAD.
In 1994, Autodesk announced AutoCAD LT which was released as freeware in April 1994.
