The AutoCAD Story
Autodesk began to produce AutoCAD as a desktop app in 1982. It was sold as an alternative to the complex systems and drafting programs typically used by architects and mechanical engineers. At its introduction AutoCAD was priced at about $1,000. By 1989 AutoCAD was the world’s fastest-growing desktop app, with 4 million installations.
Early AutoCAD customers included IBM and 3M, who used AutoCAD to design electrical harnesses for minicomputers. IBM, for example, used AutoCAD to design the mainframe computer circuit boards that became the basis of the IBM PC.
By the mid-1990s, CAD managers at companies such as 3M and General Electric (GE) were using AutoCAD at the design, development, and manufacturing stage, in tandem with their manufacturing tools. It was becoming an essential component of their workflows.
In 1995 Autodesk began to sell AutoCAD as a web-based app. Within a year, it was also available as a mobile app. With the launch of AutoCAD LT in 2001, Autodesk offered a commercial and free version of AutoCAD for “design enthusiasts” who were working on a limited scale. Over 10 million licenses had been sold by 2004. AutoCAD LT continued to expand and expand, and is now a full-scale version of AutoCAD that includes all its features. AutoCAD LT, the free version, is only suitable for drawing non-complex drawings and for creating editable drawings for non-commercial purposes.
In 2008, with the launch of AutoCAD 2009, Autodesk completely reworked the user interface, and introduced significant improvements in drafting, data management, and collaborative features. AutoCAD 2009 also introduced a new naming system. Before this change, AutoCAD users had a bewildering number of different names for the same entities.
