Background and history
AutoCAD and the other architectural software programs used by architects, engineers, and other professionals in the field have evolved from the products originally developed by a group of MIT-trained engineers called the Dez Architectural Group (DAG). When the Dez Architectural Group was formed in 1972, they intended to develop a new company and product that would compete with the then-dominant architectural software products on the market: AutoLISP by the American company Conceptis and the programming language that accompanied it, LISP. With a group of six MIT graduate students and one professor, they developed and wrote a CAD program called “XCAD.” However, with AutoLISP being much more successful than LISP, the DAG decided to create a competing CAD product called CAD/CAM, which would run on a PDP-11. However, they were unable to raise the capital to develop the product and the venture failed. They then turned to Peter Dez, a previous MIT graduate student, who had a more modest goal of developing a low-cost CAD product for personal computers. With Dez’s help, they renamed the product AutoCAD and relaunched it for commercial use in late 1982.
The first version of AutoCAD was an exclusive package for the Apple II computer that retailed for $1,995, which was less than half the price of the competing Conceptis program ($3,995). In 1983, an introductory package that included keyboard and plotter-printer drivers, AutoCAD Basic, was released. It allowed personal computer users to design architectural drawings using a mouse and a keyboard. AutoCAD Basic was updated and released as AutoCAD 2.0 in 1984 and was bundled with the popular Atari 8-bit family of personal computers. With the release of AutoCAD 2.0, the product was renamed AutoCAD for PC. In 1986, the first release of AutoCAD for the Macintosh was released as AutoCAD for Macintosh.
In the late 1980s, the growing market for AutoCAD for the Apple Macintosh prompted Autodesk to develop a version of AutoCAD for the Mac. Autodesk began to develop a version of AutoCAD for the Intel-based Windows 3.x operating system in 1993. In addition, Autodesk developed a web-based version of AutoCAD for the internet. I’m writing an application using C++11 and Boost 1.58.0, and I’m running into an error when attempting to run an aio_write() with this code:
