Beginnings

The origins of AutoCAD date back to March 2, 1975 when the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) finished developing its original prototype. CAD was called the Virtual Mecha-Drainage Program (VMD). The first CAD workstations were the SDS Sigma-3 and SDS Sigma-5. In 1980, the system was renamed to VMS, or Virtual Manufacturing System. VMS was based on the SRI workstation and a dedicated minicomputer known as the SDS 940. This early model was known as the SDS 940XL (XL=X series).

The “XL” in the name was because the SDS 940 was the 9th X series of SDS Sigma minicomputers. The first X series of SDS machines was announced in 1973, and the 9th version of the X series was the SDS 940. The XL in the name came from the fact that the 940XL was the XL of the 9th X series. The SDS machines had the Sigma engine, which was a miniaturized version of the SDS 940, and they all ran SDS 940-compatible software.

The SDS 940 was an advanced graphics and word processing minicomputer. It had a built-in word processing system that was based on the SDS word processing system, but there were also dedicated word processors and other word processing software packages available for the SDS.

The CAD portion of the VMS prototype was known as CAD by the SDS Sigma-3. CAD was based on the VMS architecture, but was intended to be a standalone program.
