An Adventurer’s Tale

you are a loner with a thirst for knowledge, a book in your hands, and nowhere to go. in this free web novel adventure game you will travel to new places, meet new characters, and have to find a way to return home. but before you go, you are tasked with solving seven mystery, which might be as simple as a murder or as dark as an unsolved disappearance. all you have to do is read the mystery, figure out what it means, and then make a choice: go to the location mentioned in the clue, or choose a different one? theres no other option. theres no backtracking. youre going to need to proceed through each mystery by the letter of the clue. you have a map, but its really just a meaningless toy, trying to trick you into playing the game your way. the only guide in this story is the book you carry. the only way to return home is to uncover the mystery. the only way to end the story is to solve the mystery, return home, and live out your life.

i cant describe in words how i ended up a roleplaying game developer. storytelling is something i always enjoyed. i had lots of friends who played lots of tabletop games in highschool but i didnt really get into them until after i entered college. then i discovered roleplaying games. i dabbled in the hobby for years. i had some great childhood adventures, and made a name for myself with a world of darkness inspired game called darkstalkers in the real world. but then i decided to take the plunge in 2012 and play an indie-rpg calleddarkest dungeon. i fell in love with that game and i was hooked. it was so richly written, the writing was so human, so tight. the story was scary, the characters were complex and deeply flawed, the storytelling was riveting, the weapons and gear could all be used in a tactical fashion, the combat was simple but enjoyable, the magic system was a nice change of pace, and the puzzles were clever. its the kind of game that your characters never become callous to danger, their moral compass is always intact. the conceit of the game was that there is nothing out there for you but your own skills, your wits, and your courage. i loved that. in the midst of all that i also loved the concept of the base game (the original darkest dungeon), and the full, official content, just as much as i did the minimal free content. i instantly decided to finish making the free content for my game, and to make a book-like web novel to help others, while i experimented with and learned the mechanics of running a free web novel story.

and now, i have found myself in the city. what awaits me i cannot say, but i will take my time, adventure wherever this path takes me, and if i should perish in the attempt, then so be it. who knows where my journey will end..

an adventurer’s tale is a point and click adventure game developed by four notch games, published by tinybuild and available for windows. you control the character known only as an adventurer. the game takes place in a retro-futuristic dungeon, surrounded by neon lights and bad music. you can talk to other characters and interact with the environment to solve simple puzzles. some puzzles are interactive, and they challenge your dexterity and mental ability as you try to solve them. some puzzles are optional, and you can ignore them at your leisure. all of the puzzles are generic, but it is likely you will recognise them as parts of your daily life or as things you’ve seen in movies or watched on tv. an adventurer’s tale does not have many puzzles or an elaborate storyline, but it is a very generous game in terms of what it does put you through.
when you first boot up an adventurer’s tale, you are presented with a short tutorial that explains all of the controls and gives some background on the world of an adventurer’s tale. you are then invited to enter the game, which is a third of the way into the game, and the rest of the game plays in the background, this can be opened and closed freely from this screen. during gameplay you will see a gray screen that looks like it’s covered in smoke. this is the “background” you’ll see when you’re not in a game that is active. this screen gives you the option to talk to other characters (all of which are voiced, though you cannot hear them) or interact with the environment (with the exception of the respawning enemies that have appeared and are attacking you). you can move around, push things or interact with them by clicking them in the right way, the cursor moves on its own to show you where to click or click and drag to move a window around.
