AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

AutoCAD’s basic and advanced versions have always been based on the same architecture, and the same algorithms, but they have included and discarded different drawing features. They have always used a design methodology that is sometimes referred to as a hybrid approach, borrowing elements from both structured methods and feature-based methods. Beginning with AutoCAD LT in 1991, the approach was simplified, so that AutoCAD LT has been based on a pure feature-based methodology from that point forward.

Early years
AutoCAD was first released as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. The original AutoCAD had no operating system, and the only option for graphics was the ability to draw simple lines. The first model, AutoCAD V1, was released in 1981 and was simply a drawing program with a fixed-size canvas, a front panel of controls and no commands. The company developed its own architecture for the program; the application operated in a text-based user interface. AutoCAD’s functionality was designed to be independent of the computer, and to run on a variety of platforms. The software took up almost 800K of disk space and was distributed in floppy disks.

While AutoCAD was being developed, Autodesk was also working on the “CADDY” program, which was intended to replace CADD. When the early products for AutoCAD, including the early CADDY application, were released in 1981, Autodesk sold CADDY as a new program for the same price
