  1. I love your tips using a cardboard box as a raised planter. That is great. Will it work to use a deeper box – to provide more depth for more potatoes?
And, there are a couple of gopher holes in my yard – should I put some weed fabric, on the ground, at the bottom of the box?

  2. Have just done this but planted leeks, small cabbages, carrots, parsnips, kale and spinach. Coming into winter here will get to the potatoes closer to planting time. With the virus preparing to be a bit more self sufficient 4 months down the year. Apart from the leeks have just planted a few of each of the others and shared my excess with neighbour

  3. Very informative! I’m in 6B too. I think with the rain we get those boxes are going to fall apart quickly. I’ve never tried potatoes before but I decided to use 5 gallon food grade buckets. I’ve subscribed!

  4. Are you growing determinate or indeterminate potatoes? Because determinate potatoes are usually planted about 4 inches deep and then you don't mound any dirt around them; indeterminate potatoes are planted and then you continue to mound dirt as they grow.

  5. Whilst I have been growing potatoes for a few years in buckets, bags, direct sow: I NEVER EVEN TOUGHT about using all those extra cardboard boxes that pile up!! Wow, thank you, old dogs can lean new tricks!!! I will now upcycle my boxes instead of recycling them!!! Awesome video!

  6. I live in the South West of Western Australia and we are just beginning Autumn. Can I plant seed potatoes now if I keep them in my little hot house over autumn and winter. Does watering once a week sound ok?

  7. I planted tomatoes in a large box a couple of years ago and was pleased with the results. The tomatoes did beautifully in the box. It was just temporary for one year but using boxes is an excellent solution to a raised bed that cost you nothing.

  8. Could you place the box the way that gets the best sun? I love this guide to plant and use of "companions" and supplements. All containers we can reuse are so important these days to recycle. Thank you.

  9. We used to have the big blue recycle boxes in our town, then they went to the EZ load barrels. The totes were turned in at the town barn. I asked if I could have some and they take them all. I took about twenty of them. I cut the bottom out and use them for my potatoes and also put a half dozen together for corn.
I do my potatoes almost the same, but I would fill the box up with homemade potting soil and worm castings as they grew. I think I will follow your way of filling to the top and planting peas as a fixer – great plan. Thank you.

  10. i just binged tons of farming and gardening material of you and other farmers, and it came to me: if we are copying nature, wouldnt a good mix of both be perfect? i think i obseved good rootgrowth in the leafbeds, vs the exellent waterholding capacity of woodchips? could be mixed in a cattlefeedmixer for bigger areas to cover

  11. I just found your channel recently, and I love it! What great advise. I've been gardening on raised beds, protected by a lot of leaves, but you've really open my eyes to what goes on in the soil. I'll be working more with cover crops now. I live in NH., but I'm from the Philly area, so listening to the Jersey accent is an extra bonus.

  12. Just as soon as it stops raining here (!!) I am going to get my taters in. I'm making them companions of my peas, as well. Thanks for this great idea!!!

  13. Would this box method work for growing sweet potato slips? It is already too late for my zone 9a to grow regular potatoes. Perhaps grow some pole beans on the edge instead of sugar snap peas?
