Surprising truths about legalizing cannabis | Ben Cort | TEDxMileHigh
In 2012, Colorado legalized cannabis and kickstarted a multibillion dollar industry with every product imaginable — brownies, gummy bears, granola bars, even …
Capitalists country moans about capitalist enterprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is Mike Tyson a rich white man? LoL. Definite shill but there were/are many problems with the way it's been implemented. The rich did steal the industry in a way. The ones who could bought up all available livences to grow for $200,000 or so a peice and then they held and sold the extras to others after jacking up that price. Legalization needs to mean the legal ability to grow your own and know what you smoke.
People never moved on to more powerful drugs, But, if government regulates it, then starts lacing it with other drugs?
Another surprising truth is that the body can only uptake a certain amount THC. That's why you can't overdose. And that not the product, but the environment people live in, is the biggest factor for getting a addiction.
Most of that wouldn't be a problem if people would just grow their own. That stuff is, literally, a weed, so if you don't have to hide it from law enforcement, aren't concerned about "efficiency", and happen to live in the right climate, growing cannabis isn't a big deal. No need for any funny business, just a plant in the back yard you harvest now and then to get high. It could be so easy…
Do not hesitate to use organic Cannabis for your medical issues, it is very safe!!! There are thousands of studies proving the innumerable positive medicinal benefits of Cannabis! Cannabis should ONLY be grown organically, because many of the negative side effects that some people may experience, are caused by the synthetic chemicals being used to grow some plants. Therefore if possible, ALWAYS make sure the Cannabis plant is grown ORGANICALLY, using only naturally sourced grow products. If taking concentrates, make sure they are made using ONLY naturally sourced, food grade solvents or CO2, and start taking it only in small doses! The Cannabis Plant is a miracle healer!

Teenagers and young adults who use marijuana may be messing with their heads in ways they don’t intend. Evidence is mounting that regular marijuana use increases the chance that a teenager will develop psychosis, a pattern of unusual thoughts or perceptions, such as believing the television is transmitting secret messages. It also increases the risk of developing schizophrenia, a disabling brain disorder that not only causes psychosis, but also problems concentrating and loss of emotional expression. In one recent study that followed nearly 2,000 teenagers as they became young adults, young people who smoked marijuana at least five times were twice as likely to have developed psychosis over the next 10 years as those who didn’t smoke pot. Another new paper concluded that early marijuana use could actually hasten the onset of psychosis by three years. Those most at risk are youths who already have a mother, father, or sibling with schizophrenia or some other psychotic disorder. Young people with a parent or sibling affected by psychosis have a roughly one in 10 chance of developing the condition themselves—even if they never smoke pot. Regular marijuana use, however, doubles their risk—to a one in five chance of becoming psychotic. In comparison, youths in families unaffected by psychosis have a 7 in 1,000 chance of developing it. If they smoke pot regularly, the risk doubles, to 14 in 1,000. For years, now, experts have been sounding the alarm about a possible link between marijuana use and psychosis. One of the best-known studies followed nearly 50,000 young Swedish soldiers for 15 years. Those who had smoked marijuana at least once were more than twice as likely to develop schizophrenia as those who had never smoked pot. The heaviest users (who said they used marijuana more than 50 times) were six times as likely to develop schizophrenia as the nonsmokers. So far, this research shows only an association between smoking pot and developing psychosis or schizophrenia later on. That’s not the same thing as saying that marijuana causes psychosis. This is how research works. Years ago, scientists first noted an association between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. Only later were they able to figure out exactly how cigarette smoke damaged the lungs and other parts of the body, causing cancer and other diseases. The research on marijuana and the brain is at a much earlier stage. We do know that THC, one of the active compounds in marijuana, stimulates the brain and triggers other chemical reactions that contribute to the drug’s psychological and physical effects. But it’s not clear how marijuana use might lead to psychosis. One theory is that marijuana may interfere with normal brain development during the teenage years and young adulthood. The teenage brain is still a work in progress. Between the teen years and the mid-20s, areas of the brain responsible for judgment and problem solving are still making connections with the emotional centers of the brain. Smoking marijuana may derail this process and so increase a young person’s vulnerability to psychotic thinking. (You can read more about how the adolescent brain develops in this article from the Harvard Mental Health Letter.) While the research on marijuana and the mind has not yet connected all the dots, these new studies provide one more reason to caution young people against using marijuana—especially if they have a family member affected by schizophrenia or some other psychotic disorder. Although it may be a tough concept to explain to a teenager, the reward of a short-time high isn’t worth the long-term risk of psychosis or a disabling disorder like schizophrenia.
WHat he is is partly a myth. Of course in 1960 you could find half aa per cent weed but Acopulco Gold and Thai sticks was as good as most strains now.
I don't see why the government cares they give us all the other tools to kill ourselves
Bring an elderly on stage who is addicted to opioids (there are so many)…talk about liver disease…
Comedian / Professor
I'm just realizing I found out one of the best high-rise was getting high on God. Like you in the beginning once in awhile then it got to be all the time and now it's necessary. I seem to want him in my life every minute. now it Him I'm talking to not myself. I say constantly. YOUR WILL NOT MINE!!!!!! And from what you're saying I'm addicted and this is a bad thing.
You're always going to have idiots. I'm learn to smoking less and enjoy it more. I can take one or two tokes and get a buzz I don't keep smoking it. And when you do that you really get high
Then you should mention the fact that if it's supposed to be grown and no profit is to be made. The government's lying to us again right people are making money Big time how can they say it's nonprofit
Uninvited!
truth hurts …
People buy drugs to escape obviously poor people will medicate. But those people that are not poor, do pills from their doctor so you can keep that high paying job. Also drugs are directly related to your happiness.
This guy should really get into a podcast with Joe Rogan. Joe and Jamie will kill this guy with facts btw shame on TED for giving this negative mind a platform.
Well I'm all for free samples to be delivered to the alphabet community if it encourages them to maybe make a bad decision 👍
sold out to big pharma…he got scared and went back to mommy.
fear monger….THC is not dangerous and is good medicine. Get off my cloud.
I was vibing with him… Right up until his "scary" pot addiction and his story about the last time he got "wasted"
compare EVERY statement he makes to alcohol, and you'll see that talking about cannabis is a waste of time. remember the 80/20 rule. this guy is in the minority…he couldn't handle his weed and thinks you can't either and if the last time he got "wasted" was 1996….he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about
He painted a narrow picture with a very broad brush. Seems he took the extreme ends of statistics. Statistics lie. They are misleading. Take a look at California's Jayden's Journey. There's an anomaly he conveniently ignored. Majority of their foot traffic is either elderly seeking medicinal use or parents of kids who have found relief from ailments like epilepsy and ADHD and autism. There will always be profit mongers in any industry. But there are good people with hearts of gold that are trying to help people.
In nevada leagelising pot had made it more available to kids. Its showing up in schools, the kids use vapor pens. Very easy to hide and hard to detect. Our kids are now smoking more pot than ever before.
NONSENSE! 1960's bud had a lot more than 1% THC. Maui Wowie was at least 25% THC (plus it had some cannabivarin). Potent hashish with THC as concentrated as in any of our modern extracts has existed for ten thousand years! THC is a potent medical ingredient. THC fights cancer in at least a dozen different ways. Google "Rick Simpson oil". Dr. Lester Grinspoon of Harvard University Medical School has debunked this guy's nonsense claims about THC causing mental illness. Get Grinspoon's book "Marihuana Reconsidered" published by Harvard U. Or get his book "Marihuana: The Forbidden Medicine" published by Yale U.
Somebody dropped their pacifier and their sense of accountability.
Alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs kills !! cannabis Killed nobody!!! Leave it alone and make it legal across the board and shut up
Pigs
If you’re smoking to get high you’re really smoking to Medicaid you just don’t know it ,
I know way too many small growers making a good living to fall for his "rich getting richer" narrative.
So who exactly is he blaming for those arrest rates? And is he purposely leaving out the details?
Genius! That's how you demonize weed — connect it to rich white men, lol
Why does he say most of the big cannabis business is white men like that's a negative thing? And how does he even know that?
Legalize it only to grow and consume but not trade or sale
That get rid of the profits which gets rid of greed which gets rid of addiction
Cuz as soon as the government knows that there's money to be made and there's rich people know there is money to made, they start pushing it for more people to do it….there is the reason for addiction
Capitalists country moans about capitalist enterprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!
