I used to spend my summers in a library watching and being observed by parents. I felt sorry for them, but I also felt grateful that they were ready to go out into the world. I ended up working at a small library, where I struggled to obtain part-time work. I was the only one of my former classmates who worked in a public library. At the time I knew this was due in part to my lack of credentials. I did not have much more than a high school education. When I told friends, including one of my regular church friends, that I would be attending college, his reaction was, “What makes you think you can afford it?” I did not know that the conventional path for a person who did not attend college was to work a minimum wage job or remain unemployed. All I could think was, “No one else in my graduating class has a job.”

in early may, mind research institute received grant funding to continue its work and ask these questions in a new form. mind research institute has brought together three new members to serve on a mathematics instruction research advisory board. the board will work with mind research institute staff to guide mind research institute as it supports work on cqi.
mind research institute’s community college mathematics leadership fellowship and national stem fellowships help bring together current and future community college mathematics faculty, administrators, and students to consider questions on the future of mathematics instruction. these involve different leadership structures and organizational forms, which may support differing levels of interest and participation.
