This program will develop students grasp of the transport needs of London during the half-millennium 1851 to 1970, including the Industrial Revolution and urban expansion. This will provide an insight into London life and social history. It will also develop students knowledge of urban and metropolitan planning, and the skills and understanding to plan and design cities on a national, metropolitan and local scale. We will examine transport needs and the development of transport services during the half-millennium, and the extensive and detailed network of transport services provided by London Transport. Finally, we will examine the requirements for the planning and design of cities with particular reference to the transport infrastructure and planning requirements for London. The course will include a survey of transport policy and infrastructure in the UK. Geographical, chronological and social surveys of Transport and London will also be undertaken.
Description: This programme provides a general introduction to the historical development of urban transport in contemporary and global contexts. We will therefore begin with an overview of the early history of transport, moving on to the transport and commercial growth of the Industrial Revolution in England and its effects on London, before concluding with contemporary globalisation and the impacts of economic, technological and demographic change upon urban transport. We will also consider transport, urban living and the development of physical city infrastructure in London from 1850 to the present day, as well as key advances in transport infrastructure and public transport policy over the last half-century.
Credits: 15.0Contact: Dr Hazel PearsonDescription: The Industrial Revolution marked a massive change in the way the city of London was lived in and this course is designed to shed light on the nature of that change, and to explain how the growth of commercial and industrial London transformed Londoners, and how they responded to that transformation. The course will examine how a long tradition of local planning work in the metropolitan and urban areas was transformed, and how London became the first global city. The city was the centre of capitalism, industry and commerce, and no British city exercised greater influence on the rest of the world than did the capital. The course will review London as a major hub in the global economy and examine the consequences of rapid industrialisation and urban expansion on the operation of the city and the people who lived and worked there. We will examine the language and literature of industrial society, and explore the manner in which London as a city changed during this period, and how the city came to exert a profound impact upon people all over the globe. We will examine the history of transport, the role of the railways, and the changes in the provision of public transport in the city, and study how the city reacted to its commercial and physical development.
