The singing of the Sukhmani in its entirety, especially in the early hours of the morning when the soul is newly illumined by the uplifting influence of the Guru and of the Guru’s grace, has an exceptional religious power. In fact the Sukhmani seems in some sense to be an illuminating weapon of the Guru’s grace to inspire the soul of the reader to its fullness.
In Sukhmani, we can see the difference between the truth, which is universal and eternal, and human perceptions of it. These perceptions and human intellect are the source of all the illusions which we encounter in life. These illusions can be removed or destroyed only by the teaching of the Guru, the Truth-Seeker. The Sukhmani is the first of the Guru Granth Sahib’s discourses to show explicitly the significance of human intellect and the need for personal quest for Truth. It is a spiritual teaching on the obligations of the seeker of the Truth to his Guru. It is important to remember that the Sukhmani was written between 1573 and 1577, i.e., after the Guru ji had started his mission.
The headings given in the title to the Sukhmani are as follows:- 1. Vrindhaprakar vaktapevam me gurunal chepatre / “Shining in glory is the second Guru, a source of peace”. The second Guru is a spiritual force whereupon the seeker of Truth should meditate. “He who spends his life meditating upon the second Guru will experience true peace.” 2. yajnik evam danak, vayudhak jivan karo, / “The life-giving seed brings forth jewels of gold, diamonds of the sky and pearls of the earth; thus shines this divine light”. The first commandment of the Guru is jivan karo – (Life.) “Do what gives the most benefit to others.” 3. Purbhokhu shaktprundam janma, takshakram janma, / “Men can neither attain to eternal bliss nor vanquish the most frightening sin”. The second Guru addresses the human soul with a forceful and persuasive appeal to turn away from the demons of the world and to follow the Guru in the path of righteousness and love for others. 4. Suvrativargah, sudargah mehnsādeh / “He gives peace, shelter and mercy”. The third Guru gives a spiritual guide to the seeker. “He who follows this guide will enter the innermost shrine of the heart.” 5. Indrayogeshwar me karo bharam, / “He whose face is beautiful and who has the most contented mind”. The fourth Guru is the Giver of the divine gift of contentment.
