i would like to print them out (using the print button in for score) and score them, i am assuming that the only way to export the contents of the book is as pdf, so i need a print-to-pdf program. my question would be: do you have a print-to-pdf program that you would recommend?
are you sure you can show that as a defense of playing smooth jazz? i do believe that might be an accurate statement, but i need to know why you felt the need to utter that. i think in your place if that was the statement before you accepted a gig, youd have to make a quick exit. i can see showing up to a gig like that and saying, i wont play gershwin, ben e. king, marvin gaye, aretha franklin, hank ballard, etc in your first gig, on the off chance that it became an issue if you couldnt swing their material. but when its apparent that the issue is your choice of music? (as in you say you only swing jazz standards). wouldnt it be easier to just say, you can play what i ask?
disclaimer: i didn’t invent jazz as a genre. my paternal grandparents who emigrated from poland a few decades back were the drivers of my jazz education. they adored the music. my parents didn’t care for it. they came to bemusically more into the beatles, bach, mahler and mendelssohn. i’ve since had numerous brushes with jazz and most of my lyrics are in some form of harmony and jazz.
uh so youre saying that youre lithuanian and your grandparents are polish? i dont think i can get behind that without knowing more about how you came to the usa. i have no idea what they may have provided you. but i understand their mentality. and the point i’m making about the chicken dance is this, we did some research on that and around 80% of the time youre playing in a group of sorts, around 50% of the time we have the chicken dance going on. i think as a jazz musician, you absolutely wouldnt be able to play in any kind of music project with a standard of beef and ham and sausage without the chicken dance. and certainly not a standard wedding package which is all about ceremony, reception, party time etc. so if your saying you can play the chicken dance in jazz, then your surely able to find gigs playing jazz (broadly speaking) where its a standard or perhaps with your band you have the lyrics for the chicken dance so you can just go for it. but without having to do that, you cannot be out here as a jazz musician soloing in venues like the wedding industry. honestly, it’s one thing if youre in a group, another if youre in a gig with the chicken dance on its own. i could list a dozen more typical songs you cannot play which could be in the same circumstances.
the lessons from all of this is that you can’t learn by osmosis. to master a style you have to learn the nuts and bolts of that style. you have to be able to play it around, around, around. after that, it is just a matter of playing. you’re not going to learn something just by playing it over and over again. there is no substitute for getting a feel for the music. there is also no substitute for working with a professional. come play with us at the bgsu symphony. you’ll be amazed at the difference in your playing
i’m sure i’m only scratching the surface of the emotions and thoughts that went into this album. i am grateful to the people who came before me who paved the way for me. i am thankful that a working professional found my cd and said something. i am truly humbled to be considered a member of that elite class of musicians. i guess i will forever be their student. and i am honored to be their teacher. thank you.
