Different crops just require different spacing.. Grass seed crops for instance, some require a lot of room to stool, some are planted on 24"-30" rows for seed, yet for forage the same variety may be 6"-7" or even broadcast.
I have compared different row spacings in soybeans for my Bachelor's degree last fall. There was little to no diffence in yield between 15" and 30" row spacings, which means I am planting at 30" from now on – I can use my corn planter and it's easier to get in the field to spray post-emerge.
