On the last line of the album, J. Cole takes the opportunity to show off his lyrical skills. He indulges in a bit of wordplay and there are also some clever allusions to other musical legends. He starts by referencing Old Town Road, the hit song from country singer Kenny Chesney that features Zac Brown Band, and also notes that its fitting to have Chesney on a song that takes place in North Carolinas rust belt.
He continues: But for me, theres an old skool rap scenario – playin wiskey, distillin bootleg, and focusin on blunts. But I’ma tell you for nothin – cause you wanna know you can win em/Thats the way I beat em since Eight Mile.
In the mid-1990s, Biggie spent time in North Carolina, the home of many of the region’s most influential rappers. His biggest collaborators, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac, also spent time in the area when they were younger. J. Cole has tapped into his “roots” as part of his long-term plan to win over fans, and even give us a little more insight into why he has made a career of writing about North Carolina, even though he hails from near Memphis, Tennessee.
On the song’s final verse, J. Cole mentions other old-school hip-hop legends whom he writes about. First, he details a legendary Philadelphia legend known as Meek Mill: I see Meek Mill as just like I see Denzel, Dre, Big, Pac and all those underground icons/Ain’t no exceptions when it comes to keeping the po less niggaz on my level/Come on niggaz, Meek Mill, you think I’m a faggot?
The overall effect of the single is somewhat subtle, but yet J. Cole wants to make sure that we know that hes not just a one-trick pony. The attention is subtle, but youll notice the bent e

Its very much like being a third grade classroom and some of the kids didnt pay attention to the teacher. J. Cole is the teacher, this album is a way for me to get back at the irresponsibles. The Off-Season is a cold lesson on the realities of sex, drugs, and partying. It is a lesson on the dangers of popularity, corporate sponsorship, and imposters. It is a real-time, shout-out to Dirty Sprite, Bold and Steady, and, of course, the Chronic. It is about fast cars and riding around with your crew. It is about driving fast and recklessly (like with Jay-Z and Migos ) and it is about making love to your baby mama in a motel room. It is also about the drug game and how its a permanent aspect of the American culture (just listen to Migos.) The Off-Season, as the title suggests, is not a new-school album. Its a throwback, but its also quite a sad one, and its the perfect representation of what this generation is facing. Its just that we already knew these things.
