a good news for film lovers is that the state-owned paramount is currently inviting proposals for a new cinema development project. the cinema is located in south jakarta’s south tangerang district, near a mrt line, and the plan is to increase the number of screens to 80.
not all of the indonesian films released in 2013 were as exquisite. antonio is a small-budget movie made by two amateur actors. set during the vietnam war, antonio is a romantic triangle between an american soldier and two young women. but unfortunately, it is a total bore, which you can see from the trailer:
the indonesian film industry is still booming and the release of oscar-nominated film departure is the beginning of the year. the film follows the lead actress, fitriyah, as she learns to cope with her life after an accident. the film was co-produced by the taiwan director lee kang-sheng, who previously had made award-winning movies such as memories of underdevelopment and sympathy. but in departure, lee is back to his comfort zone of directing for the thai cinema. in this film, lee is an outsider.
the film is an adaptation of a best-selling novel by award-winning author, khoo khee hua. the film’s background music is full of chinese pop tunes, which is a bit unusual for lee kang-sheng. the film is about a girl (fitriyah) who is stuck in a bad marriage and tries to find her way to freedom. the film is still at a very early stage of production and there is no official release date yet.
finally, the yearly “new wave” movie which is the most anticipated movie at the indonesian film festival. the new wave was the first modern wave of indonesian film, a film movement that emerged in the 1990s. this year, the theme of the new wave was “being young” and was based on the story of a couple that experienced problems in their relationship.
we also co-produced 20 once again in the chinese market. the movie focuses on a young girl who falls in love with her male co-worker. but when he’s sent to investigate money laundering in the middle east, all hell breaks loose. over the years, we’ve invested in domestic films and overseas content. however, as a studio, it’s still early days yet. time will tell.
we continue to make short films, documentaries, and musicals. our latest musical is slank: reinventing javanese opera, and we have a few more musicals in the pipeline. these include a pocketful of love, a musical about musicians in the 1950s-70s, and sang supir, a musical based on the shinto religion.
we continue to innovate as well. just last year, slank: sayangku di sini, a documentary about javanese wisdom, was released. with its combination of stills, a soundtrack, and interviews with javanese elders, the film became a word-of-mouth smash.
in 2017, adipati was cast in the x-men franchise and the superhero movie batman ninja[jp]. the latter is an indonesian reinterpretation of the 1999 batman forever in which adipati appears as slank, with the wraith-like foil played by fellow slanker rosa alicia. he also appeared in his first local lead role, alongside the action star tio pakuso and the folk singer anggun.
on a more sober note, the first three chapters of his latest film the man from the sea[jp] (2018) were premiered at the taipei film festival 2018, followed by a screening at the bali international film festival in september 2018. the film premiered in hong kong in march 2019, and he will also be featuring in the upcoming netflix original film seven fallen soldiers[jp].
