the original boss theme is used for all difficulties, with the exception of the hard difficulty, where the main boss theme is used. the music in the first mission is the same as the original version, while in the second mission, it uses a new composition, “devil’s dance”. both versions are played at the end of the game.
the story begins with dante who is on his way home after a hard day at work. in the middle of nowhere, he is attacked by the devil hunter, nero, who has tracked him down. nero tells him he is seeking revenge for his mother, who was killed by the devil and his friend, vergil. when nero demands that he hand over the trinity of weapons and secret documents, dante complies and refuses to fight nero. nero is about to kill dante, but then decides not to do so. he tells dante to go back home and rest. this is where the story begins, with the credits roll and the prologue scene. dante returns home to find his dog has been possessed and killed by an unknown force. this leads him to nero’s hideout to seek help from the medici mafia, where he learns of nero and vergil’s attack on his mother. they inform him of his father’s fate, and dante heads to the local town to find vergil, who is an agent of the devil and leader of the dark sparda’s mafia. dante then finds out that vergil’s son, sparda, is also the main antagonist of the game, and is the source of the attack on his mother.
after making his way through the town, dante learns that the devil hunter nero is after sparda and that sparda’s father is an agent of the devil. dante is teleported to a cursed dimension, the “eden”. he meets the angel trish and her friend, the demon emperor mundus. they help dante and his crew get to the hell dimension and defeat the evil forces. however, they are soon trapped in the dimension and rescued by the angel sparda. after defeating sparda’s father, he reveals the reason for the attack on dante’s mother: sparda was a demon, and dante’s mother was actually a demoness, who was once the wife of sparda.
in the final chapter, dante enters the home of the demon emperor mundus and defeats him. mundus then uses the trinity of weapons and his dying breath to create trish, a clone of his dead wife, who has been possessing trish’s body. after defeating trish, mundus reveals his master plan: he has created the perfect weapons to destroy the devil empire. he sends his created servant demons to get the weapons, and tells dante to retrieve the yamato.
after retrieving the yamato, dante is teleported to a dangerous location. he is then attacked by nero, who wants to fight dante in a final duel to the death. after fighting nero, dante returns home to discover the truth behind his mother’s death. it is revealed that his mother was once possessed by an unknown force and that dante himself was created by that force to kill his mother. dante then sets out to find the source of his creation, and to destroy it. he also learns that vergil was once an agent of the devil and that he was the one who possessed his mother.
the first devil may cry was developed and published by capcom for the playstation and was released in 1999. it was a significant departure from the traditional genre of beat-’em-ups that capcom had previously produced, such as the street fighter and final fight series. the game was the first in a series of interactive fiction video games developed by capcom, the first two titles in the series being released on playstation and pc titled dmc devil may cry and dmc devil may cry 2: special edition, respectively. both titles featured the same gameplay and storyline, as well as the same playable characters and a similar level design.
