cossacks is even more enjoyable in multiplayer mode. the three settings, random maps, random nations, and direct nations play out very well in competitive and co-operative gaming. the random nations is a shame, because there are many nations i would have liked to have seen. a co-operative mode is also available with up to four players. unfortunately, most online games are text-based, and the limitations of the keyboard and mouse technology make it inconvenient.
the in-game encyclopedia is highly detailed, and it is available as a stand-alone online application that even runs without any other software or access to the internet. there are a number of other online applications in cossacks, but most are cumbersome to use, and in the end add nothing to the game. several online servers also provide access to multiplayer play. the official support for this game does not exceed the market level of most north american developers, but it does exceed that of most european companies. a must-have.
after about a year in early access, the standalone cossacks: back to war release is now available. after a massive down time, the wait is finally over! this game will bring all the cossacks features to the standalone version and more. cossacks: back to war is the standalone version of cossacks: european wars, however it is being released with a few bonuses. the small and lightweight download is only 2.3gb which makes it great for anyone wanting to try the game without installing the original cossacks. the game also includes a free “starter pack” if you want to try cossacks out before the full release. the “starter pack” includes 18 missions that can be played, or the first 15 missions can be loaded from the main menu. the “starter pack” also includes 8 new units which can be unlocked later. you can also unlock the animal riding unit and each nation. you cannot use the new unit in the bigger campaign, however you can use the animal riding unit in the campaign of the stand-alone game. also, you can save your progress at any time in the full version and load your progress in cossacks back to war. this will be a great way to test the game before investing the time of the full version.
it was more fun to pick up fow in an airport terminal. don’t get me wrong, cossacks has its engaging scenarios that you can immerse yourself in, but if you didn’t play aoe2 it’s hard to take these scenarios seriously.

cossacks: european wars is a real-time strategy game like no other. instead of hordes of repetitious units the basic gameplay element is a hand-painted 3d map. this map shows a country, a region, or a castle, which you can zoom in and out of, and in which you can equip your units. at the top left of the map you see the compass (for the ancient romans, it was the “south” and “north” flags). in the upper right you see the tide indicator. in the lower right the troops, in the lower left the production and consumption and the country’s balance sheet, and in the middle of the map there are messages and equipment. the game play is always played in the middle of a country, not only in the countryside. if you build a city, a town, a farm, or a castle, you can give a name to it, in accordance with the country’s culture (roman, greek, etc.). also, you can lead troops to outposts and fields, or you can take them out of a town, let’s say, harkov. the gameplay is thus always in the center, where you are. the game contains an even number of maps, that is, half of the maps allow the units to be controlled by a player. the gameplay is very simple: archers are nice, cavalry is very good, and there are even heroes that attack the enemy using only a horse (or a well-sharpened sword).
